Sunny Kim - Korea Artist Prize 2017

Landscape is an installation made for the MMCA Korea Artist Prize 2017 exhibition. This installation is not only an effort to bring together what I had created in the past, but also a different form of work arising from my ongoing questions on image, painting and their true nature. The structure functions as a painting and everything I created enter this “imaginary room”. The girls in uniforms are projected as they move inside the painting. I wanted to see if the entire space can exist as an image, by carefully placing the objects used for the set of the performances (tree, rocks, mirror, columns) with a performance video projected inside this space. I also wanted to see if these images - directly implicated with my fragmented emotions - create their own reality through their own complex associations.

This work goes through another form of reenactment. The reenactment of my paintings was realized through performances, and now the images from the performances are again reenacted into the space of painting. Through these repeated reenactments, I question the objectivity or validity of the images. Landscape begins with my desire to create and actually see the real space, the space that arises from the spaces in paintings where all complex and diverse things question their true natures and coexist, although fragile and anxious, just as the spaces in our minds.

Landscape seeks to create a room where paintings, images and objects coexist, by again summoning the psychological presence of what has been lost, and which I have tried to express through previous works, into a real space. I started thinking about the state of mind which led me to memories that did not exist in real life. This process is an effort to build an emotional and sensory domain for the girls and landscape I created, while imbuing them with a sense of reality.

올해의 작가상 2017에 설치되었던 ‘풍경’은, 내가 만들어 오던 것들을 한곳에 모으는 작업이기도 하지만, 회화에 대한 고민과 함께 이미지란 무엇인가를 질문하는 과정에서 나온, 또 다른 모습의 작업이며, 그 여정에서 자연스럽게 파생된 상상의 방이다. 영상이 그림 위에 투사되고 그림속의 소녀들이 빛이 되어 또다시 그림 속에서 움직인다. 퍼포먼스에 설치되었던 오브제들(나무, 돌, 거울, 기둥)이 퍼포먼스 영상과 함께 배치되면서, 공간 전체가 하나의 이미지로서 존재할 수 있는지, 그리고 나의 불완전한 감정들과 직접적으로 관계를 맺은 이미지들이 스스로 복잡하게 얽혀 그들만의 reality를 만들어 낼 수 있을지를 고민해 보는 과정을 겪었다.

이 공간에 존재하는 이미지들은 또 다른 재연(reenactment)의 과정을 거친다. 그림의 재연이 퍼포먼스에서 이루어졌고, 다시 퍼포먼스의 이미지들이 그림으로 재연된다. 반복되는 재연을 통해 내가 질문하는 것은 이미지의 객관성/타당성(objectivity/validity) 에 관한 생각들이다. 이 작업은 마음 속 공간처럼, 복잡하고 다양한 모든 것이 본연의 모습을 질문하며 위태롭고 불안하지만 함께 공존하는 그림 속 공간을, 실제의 공간으로 만들고 싶은, 그리고 그것을 실제로 보고 싶은 나의 욕구에서 출발했다.

‘풍경'은 그동안 내가 작업을 통해 표현하고자 했던 잃어버린 것들에 대한 심리적인 영역을 다시한번 실제공간으로 불러내어, 그림과 영상과 오브제가 공존하는 방을 만드는 것이다. 존재하지 않는 기억을 만들어 낼 수밖에 없었던 나의 의식상태에 대한 생각은 내가 만들어낸 소녀들과 그들이 배회하는 풍경속에서 감정적이고 감각적인 영역을 구축하며, 소녀들과 그들이 속한 세상에 실제성(Reality)을 부여하고자 하는 노력이다.
